Launched in 2008, GMF’s Mediterranean Strategy Group (MSG) is the leading, sustained transatlantic forum on issues affecting the Mediterranean region, broadly defined. Now in its 26th edition, the group brings together leaders from government and business with analysts and opinion shapers from both sides of the Mediterranean and both sides of the Atlantic. Discussions are informal and held under the Chatham House rule. The Compagnia di San Paolo and Fondazione CSF are partners in this project alongside GMF. This year’s edition includes the support of Generali.
In October 2026, we will hold the 26th edition of the MSG in Trieste on the theme of Global Shifts, Mediterranean Consequences. Global power balances are shifting from security and technology to finance, trade and the projection of “soft power". Ideas about power and how we measure it are also evolving. The Mediterranean sits at the intersection of these dynamics, exposed to competition among the United States, Europe, Russia, and China and to the aspirations of regional and emerging actors, even individuals. This edition of the MSG will assess how global power shifts may reshape the strategic environment around the Mediterranean, north and south and, perhaps, how Mediterranean developments may affect the global scene. We will conclude with a thought experiment, thinking through the likely contours of the Mediterranean world in 2035 – convergence, divergence or simply more chaotic and complex?
